These are small, often brightly colored shells belonging to the large sea snail family. Most are globular in shape. They are strong and solid. Nerites have no umbilicus and the aperture if often toothed on the inner and outer lip. They live in shallow warm seas in large colonies close to shore. They have been found in brackish water and a few in freshwater. Nerites are herbivores.
